This route comes off
152 and connects it with Hollister, San Juan Bautista, and Castroville.
156 was proposed to be a freeway west of US101. This was never
completed. You can see stubs of pavement for this project near
Castroville, at the bottleneck by 183. 156 is multiplexed with US101 in
the Prunedale area, and 156 is a scenic route. In 2022 the light is being taken out at Castro Valley Boulevard. A four lane expressway will be done from 2023 to 2025 from 183 to US101. It will be on a new alignment. I read that in a news media article. Also I read the highway was built in 1942. Blackie Road and Castro Valley boulevard are not old 156. I saw news media articles that said people should stay away from the current two lane 156. I first was on it in 1986 and it was a nail biter even then!
156 was rerouted in the Hollister area around 1998 to bypass town. The
old route is 156 Business. The new interchange with 152 opened on
8/28/2008 and it was badly needed.
