J1 East and 180 East (Shields Avenue)

This route is proposed 180. For a while in the 1960s, 180 ran as far east as US 101. It probably was decertified because one section of the route in San Benito County is only one lane wide. When (or if) completed, it might go along Little Panoche Road (a very bad dirt road) to form a more direct route. This is from July 1995. Caltrans has talked about making a 180 expressway south of here to I5.

Just east of I5. Shields Avenue runs through the hills until it passes the aqueduct.

This was taken in the summer and on a day when the smog was not so bad. You can make out the Sierras and their snow pack in the distance.

[J1 East]

Here is Shields Ave between Russel Ave and Fairfax.

[J1 East]

This is Fairfax Avenue.
These mountains are between I5 and US101, including Pinnacles National Monument, and several large tracts of BLM Land.

This is 180 by Chandler Airport, which is no longer Fresno's main Airport. This is barely inside Fresno.
The high rises are the Tower District. This is near the new 180 freeway.
