Highway 85 Under Construction

The official groundbreaking for Highway 85 (north of 87) was April 20th, 1988. These three were taken about November 1988. Route 85 was then under construction from Miyuki Ave to 87, and the only northern construction (north of 87) was the overpass at Stevens Creek Blvd. Caltrans largely built 85 from 87 Northwards, and 85 South of Miyuki Ave. San José built the segment from Miyuki to 87. These photos are old but they are looked at quite a bit.

This is how overpasses were built for 85. The street was detoured to the side and an overpass built next to it. Even Highway 17 had a bent detour like this from 1991-1993. The overpasses in the Winchester Blvd section caught fire during construction more than once.

This is by the entrance to 85 North. 85 North started here from 1973 - 1994.

The trench is being dug to build the supports for the Stevens Creek overpass. Some of the ramps from 85 to 280 were reconstructed in 1992.

In 1985,  it looked like 87 would by open and done by 1987, along with 85 from 87 to Miyuki.
