Highway 85 South in California

These first four are from 8/3/2009, and they are of 85 South between 87 and Blossom Hill Road. The freeway arcs to the south here.

[85 South]

This is the Blossom Hill Road exit. There was construction in this area by the fall of 1985. The exit is not signed as "G10" nor has it ever been. Traffic on Blossom Hill Road dropped quite a bit after 85 opened in 10/1994.

[85 South]

This is past Blossom Hill Road. So far the bottom line on the mile sign is left blank, because the sign went up before 85 reached US101 directly.

[85 South]

This is approaching Cottle Road. 85 used to end here until the early 1990s.

[85 South]

This is of 85 South in April 2001. There are a lot of orange wildflowers in the hills.

Here is 85 at Great Oaks in early 1999.
Note how green the hills are. This overhead sign was installed in 1992 and was replaced in June 2003 with Caltrans' new style of overhead signs. There is a carpool to carpool interchange sign covered up.

A carpool lane to carpool lane interchange was built between 85 and 101, and it was done in 2004. It will be similar to the I5/405 interchange in Orange County. A ramp from US101 South to 85 North opened in September 2004 (cutting down on traffic on Bernal Rd) and a ramp from 85 South to US101 North was not built. There is no direct access to Monterey Highway so you have to take Bernal Road, though fewer people take Monterey Highway now since US101 is finally wide enough between 85 and Cochrane.

Here are two photos from 12/21/2003 of 85 South and US101, showing the road construction in progress of the carpool lane interchange. The sign for the carpool to carpool ramp is temporarily covered up. The southbound carpool exit was almost done in October 2004.

[85 South in December 2003]
