280 South in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties

This is the start of I280 South in San Francisco in July 1988, about 15 months before the Loma Prieta quake damaged this general area of 280. 280 started at this point, but pavement snaked its way farther north unopened. I'm keeping these first two old photos for historic value.

This is looking northwards, at the end of 280 in July 1988. Note how the southbound side is blocked off from the unopened freeway.

[280 South]

This is southbound Interstate 280 by Interstate 380 in July 1988. I380 access the airport but it does not run far south of here. It was proposed to reach Highway 1.

This shows I280 overlooking the San Francisco airport. This is just past I380 on 3/12/1988.

[280 South]

This is Southbound 280 near 92 in July 1988. This part is an official scenic route.

This is in Palo Alto.

[280 South]

This is before JCT 85. It only ran north of Stevens Creek Boulevard back then. Also when 85 opened south of Stevens Creek in 1994 no "85 South" sign went over the blank spot.

[280 South]

This is before Foothill Expressway (G5) and Grant Road.
