US101 South in Santa Barbara County
This is a construction photo of US101 South in Santa Barbara in
April 1988. The freeway is being constructed here in the center
divider in 1988. The construction zone showed here starts near Castillo Street. This project was
seriously needed because US101 could be congested through the
approximate ten traffic lights that were around this section. In 2008 I
noticed this section is hard to notice on the new freeway. The freeway was
built over the old highway. I was on the old highway from 1986 to 1989 and
it could be a doozy. Also turning from the side streets to the old highway was
bad. The freeway was built from 1988 to 1991. These were the traffic lights: Chapala Street, State Street, Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara Street, and Laguna Street with Montecito Street. The side streets were congested because the freeway was not complete back then.
