US101 over Cuesta Grade (north of San Luis Obispo) used to seem
about as dangerous as Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It was
four lanes wide and divided, with some pretty dangerous looking left
hand turns. Starting about 2000 it was widened and improved greatly. It
is six lanes wide now in the mountains, and looks so much safer now.
These next three photos show this, and they are from 7/10/2005.
If I remember correctly, the climb seems worse heading north than south. The divider was redone with this project also.
This is after the summit, and the mountain in the distance is by US101
and 58. US101 bottlenecks after leaving Cuesta Grade. Here you see this
mile sign:
Atascadero 8
Salinas 116
San Francisco 223
This is near Atascadero and the elevation is a little higher than you
might think.
