Here the highway splits apart. Northbound takes the left side of I5, and this is the steepest grade heading north in the Grapevine. Violin Summit is at the end of this climb at about 2800'. Mile 177.

This photo is the first photo I was able to take on 12/26/1990. We were in the dark before this and there was some snow at the side of the road. This photo is unfortunately blurry because there was barely any light at this time. This shows the mountains to the north and also the fact the directions of the freeway are reversed here. This freeway was closed for a week before this. We were pushing our luck by taking this home this day. I should have put this photo up in 1998 when I first put my site up. Also I would not drive this freeway personally when chains are required.
