88 East in Alpine County

 Here is Carson Pass (this is not far from Caples Lake.)  The elevation is 8573'.
This is higher than Echo Summit on US50 (7382') or Donner Summit on I80 (7241'). It is also higher than almost any pass on I80 except for one near Cheyenne, Wyoming. Here you are on the top of Red Lake Grade old route before 1972 turned right here, and when you are south of Red Lake, you can see the old road from the lookout behind the lake.

I wouldn't want to do this ride with chains on.
